TRICK 'R TREAT REVIEWS

Trick 'r Treat
By Mark H. Harris, About.com

Trick 'r Treat is a movie from Hell: Development Hell. Originally slated for theatrical release in October 2007, it was pushed by Warner Brothers to 2008 and then summarily dropped from the schedule altogether. Such behind-the-scenes schedule shuffling would tend to indicate an inferior product that's instilled the studio with little confidence, but in the case of Trick 'r Treat, nothing could be further from the truth. Not only is the film not inferior, but it would have to be considered to date one of the best horror releases of the 21st century -- if it ever gets released, that is.

Trick 'r Treat
By Andrew Kasch

You’ve heard it all before but this time it’s for real: Trick ‘r Treat is the film that horror fans have been waiting for - the antidote to every insipid remake, sequel and over hyped “holy grail” we’ve had to suffer through in recent years. Bursting onto the screen with endless energy, first-time director Michael Dougherty (co-writer of X-Men 2 and Superman Returns) has cast aside all pretensions and delivered a wildly entertaining slice of EC Comics gold equal to Creepshow and the very best of Tales from the Crypt.

John Carpenter gave you a very good reason to fear Halloween night. He placed an undistinguished face on a knife-wielding stalker who prowled archetypal small town USA neighborhoods and destroyed their idyllic safety. With its pulsing score, crisp leaves-strewn streets, horror movie marathons, carved jack-o-lanterns and lingering unease, Halloween is a masterpiece of the slasher genre set against the backdrop of a spirited holiday. Consequently, Carpenter's classic has become a permanent annual fixture on every must-see Halloween horror list. But its reigning crown is about to be revoked, or at least shared, when Michael Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat reaches the public because it is, unequivocally, the quintessential Halloween film.

Trick 'r Treat

The most anticipated film in the horror community was finally premiered at this year's Screamfest. This film has been tossed around and beat around over and over for almost 3 years now. Being rejected by distributors various times due to graphic content against children and just overall being "too risky," even now the film suffers a tragically uncertain future DVD release (although IMDB has an October 31 release date, director Michael Dougherty said himself the film has no certain future). Going into this movie knowing I was going to be one the first to see it before anybody for probably what could be many years to come, I knew it was going to be special. After the film had ended, after those long years of anticipation, and anxiety for what promised to be a unique, fun, bloody good time, I can honestly tell you that this movie fucking delivered everything it promised and a billion times more of what you were hoping for.

Trick 'r Treat
The Screamin' Demon

I’ve just had a theatrical experience, and I don’t really know how to put this down properly, so bear with me as I free form my thoughts on the film that I just witnessed.

I just got home from the opening night of the LA Screamfest, and what an opening it was. Trick ‘r Treat was fantastic, and I need to get this out of the way right now. Warner Bros. is shooting themselves in the foot for not releasing this film. What they’re shelving it for makes absolutely no sense to me. This is what horror fans have been waiting for (unless you’re a Saw/Rob Zombie fan in which case you’re not allowed to enjoy quality films). Writer/Director Michael Dougherty has something very special here, and he manages to do something that almost no horror films in recent memory have managed. He mixes suspense, action, gore, terror and comedy seamlessly without tipping too far in one direction. Trick ‘r Treat is the film we, as horror fans, have been waiting for. And, we’re going to keep on waiting.

SCREAMFEST 2008: Trick 'R Treat Premiere
Hiko Mitsuzuka

HIH was at the opening night for Screamfest 2008 in Hollywood on Friday, and I was absolutely thrilled to be among the first audience to screen Mike Dougherty's Trick 'R Treat, a frighteningly fantastic throwback to traditional horror movies.

The film (it's soooo good. Like, SCREAM good) stars True Blood's Anna Paquin, Brian Cox and Dylan Baker in four different storylines that weave in and out of each other in a small Ohio town on Halloween night. Four girls are stalked by a shadowy figure. An old hermit is terrorized by a trick-or-treater who'll do anything to get a piece of candy. Pranksters learn a deadly lesson about their town's history. And a school principal collects some very special jack-o-lanterns...All of it comes together nicely in a brilliant twist ending that leaves you wanting more.

Trick 'r Treat
Horror's Not Dead

I was waiting for something to get me excited about horror movies again.

Because seriously, kids, you have a new Favorite Goddamn Movie. And you don’t even know it. Who knows when the fuck you’ll even get to see it? Nobody. That’s who. Not even the dude who directed it. And that breaks my goddamn heart.

Trick 'r Treat
Tremendo Time

The fat kid from Bad Santa, the pedophile from Happiness, the reluctant mutant from X-men, Helo from Battlestar Galactica, tons of pumpkins and candy corn, and the latest, creepiest little horror icon this side of Chucky and/or Leprechaun.

Director Michael Dougherty loves Halloween. I mean he REALLY loves Halloween. And his love casts an even darker shadow on the already spooky gloom of the holiday in this excellent horror anthology.

Trick 'r Treat
Horror Movie A Day

2008 will probably be forever known as the year that horror got fucked. First Midnight Meat Train was buried by its distributor (that would be Lionsgate), given a blink and you'll miss it release on 100 2nd rate screens throughout the country. Then the Gate decided to do even LESS of a release for Repo (try to find it November 7th! I think you win a prize if you do). And now we have Michael Dougherty's Trick 'R Treat, which Warner Bros doesn't seem to be willing to release at all. And wouldn't you know it - all 3 films sit comfortably in my top 5 horror films of the year (another one is Let The Right One In, which is simply being remade for idiots rather than try to give a wide push to a - gasp! - foreign film).

Trick 'r Treat
By Staci Layne Wilson

Michael Dougherty gives us something good to eat with his feature directorial debut, Trick 'r Treat. While several horror movies have been situated on or around the holiday of Halloween none have quite used the notorious date to its full potential: until now.

Review: Trick R Treat
By Mighty Worm

This review is a little pointless, I’ll admit, since it’s for a movie that is not currently playing nor soon to be released. In fact, according to the writer/director, it has no scheduled release date at all. So in a sense, it doesn’t exist. Which I guess is why I feel compelled to tell you about it.

The Best Halloween Movie You Won't See This Month:
TRICK R TREAT!!!

Ain't It Cool News

Hey folks, Harry here... It is outrageous that Warner Brothers never got it together to release a FINISHED film - that even a Weinstein could open in October - that has an amazing one sheet ready for release - and trailers that are screaming to be cut. The friggin' title is the catch phrase - and the line, "THIS HALLOWEEN - WILL YOU TRICK R TREAT?" "WHY SAW, WHEN YOU CAN TRICK R TREAT?" Horror fans, when they see the film, dig the hell out of it. And SIDESHOW is already selling the toys, Mask companies have the costumes and masks... WHY DO THEATERS NOT HAVE THIS MOVIE?

Movies rule butt-numb-a-thon
By Claire Harlin

What's better than an awesome new horror movie? An awesome new horror movie with a director who'll stick out 24 hours of film in a theater of 250 die-hard movie fans.

"Trick 'r Treat," a comic book-derived horror thriller, was by far my favorite film shown at this weekend's ninth annual Butt-Numb-A-Thon festival - a 24-hour movie marathon that doubles as Austin film guru Harry Knowles' birthday party...

What exactly is a Butt-Numb-A-Thon part 2: Reviews
By C. Robert Cargill

Trick R' Treat. The real surprise of the day, this is a Halloween movie in the vein of Creepshow and Twilight Zone: The Movie that weaves four interconnected stories together on one wicked night. A feast for horror fans, this will readily become a holiday classic as it sets out to redefine everything that we do for Halloween and gives it a brand new mythology...

Connie Lane Gives A Long Clear Look At BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 9!!!

This is a really cool film, styled after the multi-story, horror comic book structure of the CREEPSHOW movies, but with a twist. There are (I think) four stories. But they are all happening in the same place, and weaving into each other. So the story divisions are more time-related. We start with one story, jump back a few hours and meet some other characters in the same town on the same night having a few different adventures, then jump back again...

Massawyrm Says TRICK 'R TREAT Is All Treat And No Trick!!

Michael Dougherty must have been shitting himself all through BNAT. To discover that your film had been moved from the very desirable horror film Midnight slot to playing last in the same spot films like Fellowship of the Ring, Passion of the Christ, V For Vendetta and 300had played must have been terrifying. The audience is expecting something like Cloverfield, Iron Man or Rambo and instead they're treated to Trick 'r Treat, a seasonal horror film that was recently pushed back from this year to next. How the hell were we going to react? Disappointment? Rage? Polite indifference? Well, fortunately for us all, his film was up to the task of rounding out this year's festivities....

More from Ain't It Cool News

Fun, fun, fun. This is how I like my horror, you can guiltlessly scream and laugh at what you're seeing, and I will happily rewatch this film every Halloween. An anthology film directed and written by Michael Dougherty, I really admired how each story touched on the others, and Brian Cox was a blast to watch. Very recommended.

The last movie on my top list was Trick or Treat: a treat for traditional horror fans everywhere. If you like movies like Creepshow, this campy but artistically beautiful homage to the B horror movie, will leave you with a post Halloween chocoholic satiation and a smile on your face.
